After a stunning, exposition-filled pilot episode, Dark Matters doesn't waste any time. The second episode of the fantasy series focuses on the central conflict of Philip Pullman's first novel, borrows some storylines from later books in the trilogy, and even departs from the literary source. We tell you what happened in the new episode, what to expect next, and why the serial Mrs. Coulter is even scarier than the one described by Pullman.
The Lira in London
At the beginning of the second episode of Dark Matters, young Lyra Belaqua (Daphne Keen) is the happiest twelve-year-old girl in all of London. Our protagonist finally left the gray and austere Oxford, got into the shining metropolis, and instead of boring professors, the glamorous, mysterious and charismatic Marisa Coulter turned out to be next to her. One of the most successful aspects of the second episode is how convincingly the relationship between Lyra and her new guardian is portrayed. It's easy to understand why the girl was instantly attracted to this woman - for the first time in her life, she was treated as someone special, worthy of attention and luxurious gifts. The heroine is so amazed by Mrs. Coulter's comfortable apartment and extravagant lifestyle that at first she does not notice the alarm bells - the locked exit from the apartment and the ominous noise at night.
However, Lyra quickly begins to suspect that something is wrong. Pantalaimon constantly draws attention to strange sounds coming from the walls, and the woman is clearly nervous when it comes to "dust", a mystical substance that Lord Azriel (James McAvoy) is investigating. Even if you could close your eyes to all this, then something really strange happens - representatives of the Magisterium visit Coulter, and the woman conducts some secret negotiations with them. When Ruth Wilson's character sees Lyra eavesdropping on their conversation, the soft facade disappears, and a demonic, cruel, and impressively cold woman appears in front of us. A minor dispute escalates into an open attack - the silent guardian demon attacks Pantalaimon, inflicting unbearable pain on his owner.
During this uncharacteristically violent display of emotions, Coulter accidentally reveals a secret to Leary - in fact, Lord Asriel is not her uncle, but her own father. This plot twist is hardly shocking (although the girl is really amazed by this information), but it's strange that the showrunners decided to reveal this secret right now. In the book, the protagonist learned about her origins later and not from Marisa, but from the gypsies. However, this is not the only departure from the original source, which was in this episode - then we were waiting for even more strange discoveries.
