Fleeing the Syrian civil war, Yusra and her sister embarked on a perilous journey. When their dinghy broke down in the Mediterranean Sea, they swam for hours, eventually towing the boat to safety and reaching the island of Lesbos.

After finding refuge in Berlin, Yusra pursued her dream of becoming an Olympic swimmer. She went on to compete in butterfly events for the Refugee Olympic Team at both the Rio and Tokyo Games. At just 19 years of age, she became the youngest-ever UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, passionately advocating for displaced people worldwide.

Yusra’s remarkable story is told in her book Butterfly and was adapted into the Netflix film The Swimmers. As a UNHCR Ambassador, she continues to raise her voice for refugees. In 2023, Yusra joined Oris as an Ambassador. Oris has named The Yusra Mardini Foundation an Oris Sustainability Partner in order to bring about their shared mission toward a Change for the Better.
