This year, Nintendo was all about the games at E3. Those who were still hoping for even a sliver of hope for any news about the company’s upcoming console, codename: NX, were sorely disappointed.
On the upside though, we get to see the long anticipated Zelda game, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. In fact, Breath of the Wild was the main attraction at Nintendo’s booth.
Breath of the Wild is Nintendo’s attempt of create an open world experience in the similar vein of the Elder Scrolls games. The world of Breath of the Wind is vast, about 12 times the size of Twilight Princess. The area that was featured at E3 called The Great Plateau is just about one percent of the whole game. The idea is to let the player experience the game through exploration rather than having the game tell the player where to go next. New mechanics are also introduced in the game such as collecting resources and weapons as well having Link cook his food to regain health rather than collecting hearts.
Expect The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild next year. Nintendo also announced three Breath of the Wild amiibo figures to sell alongside the new Zelda game.
While the new Zelda game was the star of the show for Nintendo, there were other news to be had. New Wii U games were announced. Teased earlier this year, we get to see more of Paper Mario: Color Splash. As the name suggests, a lot of painting is involved including a new companion, Huey the paint can.
On the 3DS, Nintendo announced Ever Oasis, which is an action-RPG similar to the Zelda franchise. This isn’t much of a surprise as the developer, Grezzo, also worked the 3D remasters of The Legend of Zelda on the 3DS.
On the mobile front, Pokémon Go is set to release on both iOS and Android platforms in mid-July. For those who aren’t familiar with the game, Pokémon Go is an augmented reality game that lets you catch Pokémons while you are out and about and battle other Pokémon Go players using your captured Pokémon. Nintendo also announced the Pokémon Go Plus peripheral, which allows you to interact with the app without using your phone.
Along with the announced new Zelda amiibo figures, Nintendo also seven new amiibo figures in the Super Mario series which include Wario, Waluigi, Daisy, Rosalina, Boo, Donkey Kong, and Diddy Kong. All seven figures will be available on November 4th.
