Nike’s Latest Laceless Running Shoe: the React Phantom Run Flyknit 2

Nike has just released their latest product along their running shoe lineup, the React Phantom Run Flyknit 2, that features versatility for runners and casual users alike. This shoe possesses elements rooted in its predecessors combined with new technology for enhanced comfort and support. Priced at P7,195, the React Phantom Run Flyknit 2 is another exciting sneaker both in Nike’s running line as well as their shoes in general.

For Nike, their idea is that more foam equals better cushioning. Their Flyknit Loft technology offers 3 layers of support for the forefoot, making the shoe lightweight, durable and breathable all at the same time. These specific qualities definitely play a major factor in any type of sneaker. However, as a shoe designed for running, these aspects are made all the more vital for better overall performance.

In addition to its Flyknit Loft, this shoe also features Flywire technology for an elastic design that intertwines with its Flyknit upper, consequently allowing the runner’s foot to feel more secure when on the move.

In recent years, one characteristic that is often seen in Nike’s performance shoes is its React technology soles for a soft yet responsive feel that provides support for the 3 phases of a runner’s stride: flexibility at toe-off, smooth ride at mid-stance and cushioning at contact. First introduced in 2018, the React technology is primarily present in fellow running shoes such as the Epic React (which was the very first Nike shoe with React technology), React Infinity Run and React Vision, as well as Nike sneakers that lean more toward athleisure such as the React 87 and React 55. All of these aforementioned shoes are more or less well-accepted and have good reviews, which is a good indication that the new React Phantom Run Flyknit 2 will be no different. After all, one of the main headlines of this sneaker is that it builds on the foundation set by its predecessors.

Aside from the Flyknit Loft, Flywire and React technologies all present in the React Phantom Run Flyknit 2, further benefits would be increased rubber on the outsole for better durability and traction, as well as additional moulding around the heel area for more security.

One thing, however, that is unique to this specific sneaker as compared to all other shoes in Nike’s React line is that it is completely laceless. In lieu of this, Flywire cables are lined horizontally parallel across the mid-foot, as if it were hugging the foot. The React Phantom Run Flyknit 2 expands on its laceless design by adding secure support that feels as if it “disappears” on your foot. The Flywire cables as compared to traditional laces definitely allow the shoe to be lighter and have better breathability, although it is yet to be seen exactly how the laceless technology in this shoe will benefit the athlete in regard to his/her overall performance.

In terms of its design, the React Phantom Run Flyknit 2 is primarily coated in synthetic leather and textile materials for its Flyknit upper. Among the first 8 colorways that Nike has released for this sneaker, its uppers are all fairly colored neutrally and are either monotonous or two-toned to be paired with the all-white React soles. Its swooshes are present at the top of the forefoot and at the side of the heel, which is located more subtly than both previous React shoes and Nike sneakers in general. It also has a heel tab at the back and another tab on top of the tongue for added assistance when fitting the shoe. Its low-cut, sleek design make it have a sock-type look and feel, which is the kind of aesthetic trend seen in shoes of the same ilk.

It seems that Nike is definitely incorporating laceless technology into its sneakers even outside of the running category, as seen in their basketball sneaker Adapt BB. How this shoe differs from the React Phantom Run Flyknit 2 is that it is equipped with the technology where you can adjust its fit, feel and support through an app. If Nike’s incorporation of laceless technology in this React shoe is well-received and successful, I wouldn’t be surprised if they further incorporate the same type of technology seen in the Adapt BB. That, of course, would mean that the shoe would then cost more, as the Adapt BB retails for $350 (almost P17,000). However, even if the Adapt BB may have overall good performance on the basketball court, that does not necessarily mean that it will translate to have the same effectivity and performance for the runners.

Personally, I’m not the biggest fan of laceless shoes not due to its performance or lack thereof, but simply and purely in terms of design and aesthetic. The React Phantom Run Flyknit 2 looks more of a running shoe than for athleisure, especially given how many of the fellow React sneakers are worn as casual wear. Regardless, this is nonetheless a promising shoe whether an avid runner, used as a gym and/or workout sneaker, or maybe even just as those comfortable-as-hell shoes that you slip-on when you go on errands or go out to grab some coffee.
