Nike’s latest campaign, “Play New,” invites people to discover sport in new ways, and in partnership with Girls Got Game, the brand has created a series of inspiring online activities to empower more young Filipinas and help them Play New for their future.

“We recognize how these young women may still be confined to societal perceptions that dictate what their goals and aspirations should be, and even what sports and games they could play. With our continued partnership with Nike, the hope is to bring to them the possibility that they can be a catalyst for change in their lives—and break out of certain gender norms with Play New,” says Mariana Lopa, Managing Director, Girls Got Game.

“At Nike, we’re focused on play, because an active generation means a more equitable future.   As part of our Made to Play commitment to get kids moving, our partnership with Girls Got Game helps us continue to show young Filipinas the joy of movement and creativity of play. By inspiring them to Play New for their future, they’ll be empowered to lead healthier, happier and more successful lives” adds Jino Ferrer, Country Marketing Manager, Nike Philippines.

Empowering young women through sports

Girls Got Game is a non-profit organization that has been organizing sports camps for young Filipinas since 2015. Through these camps, Girls Got Game aims to use sports as an avenue for young women to find inspiration through the athlete mindset of hard work and determination.

Led by an all-female team of coaches and leaders, the young Filipinas in Girls Got Game camps are taught how to play team sports games: volleyball, basketball, football and rugby. For most of them, this will be their first time engaging in these sports, as they are often considered and labeled as “boys’ sports” in the Philippines. By playing together, these young Filipinas learn the importance of community and teamwork and learn what strong women are like.

“As we all need new ways to keep moving and access sport, we will continue to host new kinds of activities that will still provide young women a safe space to play, learn, and grow, such as virtual sports camps,” explains Mariana.

Playing for the Future

In the coming weeks, Nike and GGG will be launching a series of inspiring and sports online activities to empower more young Filipinas and help them Play New for their future.

  • Play New LIVE – Virtual NTC Workout
    • Since the camps can’t run physically, the campaign will launch a series of virtual workouts featuring Nike elite athletes & GGG-focused sports led by NTC Trainer and GGG Sports Coordinator Trish Ayson and Nike athletes Alyssa Valdez and Camille Clarin. They will teach home-based workouts for sports like volleyball and basketball.
  • Nike By You
    • Nike has also partnered with local artist Jill Arteche to create special ‘Nike by You’ Play New x Girls Got Game designs. Jill is a visual artist and illustrator who showcases her unique vision of beauty from her normal, everyday experiences. She has been featured in platforms both here and abroad. Jill’s designs will be available at Nike Park Fort, BGC starting May 25, 2021. Jill will also host a virtual customization workshop exclusive to Nike members.
