MWC 2019: Introducing the six camera-toting Nokia 9 PureView, plus other phones

Here are more fresh releases from MWC 2019. Finnish company and the home of Nokia phones, HMD Global just announced a diverse range of five new smartphones aiming to cater to every need. Let’s take a quick look at them, shall we?

Nokia 9 PureView

Before you argue with us, we’re also counting the front-facing camera of the new Nokia 9 PureView. But that isn’t the centerpiece of this phone. What’s been catching people’s eyes is the new five-camera setup at the back, which reminds us of spider eyes.

While it looks like there are seven lenses, one of the holes is for the flash, while the other is for a time-of-flight sensor for depth mapping. The five cameras that are present include three 12-megapixel monochrome cameras and two 12-megapixel RGB sensors, all with f/1.8, 28mm lenses. These extra sensors aren’t for extra zoom levels. Instead, these are designed to capture a big amount of data for HDR and depth-based photography. It gives you the option to edit depth after the fact, even when using Google Photos’ depth editing feature. Photos can be taken in RAW DNG format with varying file size of 30MB.

The Nokia 9’s cameras are also designed to offer multiple focal points in bokeh shots. HMD partnered with Adobe to have Lightroom built in, letting you edit the DNG photos right from the phone. Adobe is also working on lens profiles “tuned specifically” for the Nokia 9.

As for the other specs of the phone, you get last-generation Qualcomm Snapdragon 845, which is optimized to process the photos taken by this phone. It’s paired with a dedicated Light Camera Lux Capacitor processor.

The Nokia 9 is an Android One phone so it’ll receive two years of Android upgrades and regular security updates. HMD has consistently updated its devices to the latest version of Android so you can expect this to get the same treatment. It also has a 5.99-inch 2K pOLED display (sans notch), under-the-screen fingerprint reader, face unlock via the 20-megapixel front-facing camera, wireless charging, and IP67 water resistance.

HMD is calling this a “limited edition” device with a limited run. If you are interested, though, it retails for US$699 (around P36,100).

Nokia 4.2

The Nokia 4.2 comes in at $169 (around P8,800) for the 2GB RAM/16GB variant and $199 (around P10,300) for the 3GB RAM/32GB model. It combines just the right amount of tech and features while still keeping it affordable. It comes packed with all of the essentials: running on the latest Android 9 Pie and powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 Mobile Platform. At the rear, it sports a 13-megapixel main camera + 2-megapixel depth sensor, while putting an 8-megapixel camera in the front. The Nokia 4.2 delivers an edge-to-edge 5.71-inch display, all the while maintaining an 8.4mm width—slim enough for single hand use. It also comes with a dedicated Google Assistant button, in which the user can ask queries, check schedules, set appointments, make calls, and many other functions. The Nokia 4.2 will be available to purchase starting in April.

Nokia 3.2

Following closely is the Nokia 3.2 at $139 (around P7,200) for the 2GB RAM/16GB model and $169 (around P8,800) for the 3GB RAM/32 GB variant. HMD boasts that this phone has the biggest HD+ display (6.26 inches) for its price along with a 4,000mAh battery. It runs on the Android 9 Pie and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 429 mobile platform. Similar to the Nokia 4.2, the Nokia 3.2 also comes with a Google Assistant button. The Nokia 3.2 will be available for purchase starting in early May.

Nokia 1 Plus

Next up is the Nokia 1 Plus, one of the first global Android 9 Pie (Go Edition) smartphones. It is powered by a MediaTek MT6739WW quad-core 1.5GHz processor. At an attractive price of $99 (around P5,100), it comes with a 5.45-inch screen, 2,500mAh battery, and an 8-megapixel AF rear camera and 5-megapixel FF front camera. The Nokia 1 Plus will be available for purchase starting mid-March.

Nokia 210

Still remember the days of keypads, pixel images, and call-and-text-only analog cellphones? Well, consider the Nokia 210 a hybrid of sorts—keeping the vintage vibe while upgrading some features to fit the needs of this era of “smart-everythings.” The Nokia 210 features a full keypad and colored display, and, of course, most importantly, it can connect to the internet so users can stay connected and up to date at all times. At $35 (around P1,800), the Nokia 210 will be available for purchase starting this March.

Other notable mentions: Wireless charger + Portable Wireless Charger

Joining Nokia’s accessories portfolio are two wireless charging solutions: the Nokia Wireless Charger and Nokia Portable Wireless Charger. Both devices support the universal Qi charging standard so they can work with compatible wireless charging devices, including the Nokia 9 PureView and Nokia 8 Sirocco.

The wireless charger supports fast 10-watt charging and it also doubles as a power bank that supports wireless charging on the go. The Nokia Portable Wireless Charger also supports universal USB output so that non-wireless devices can still be charged with it through a USB cable.

The Nokia Wireless charger retails for $49 (around P2,500) while the Portable Wireless Charger retails at $64 (around P3,300).
