Intel has been struggling to get a strong foothold in the smartphone industry for years. But with the cancellation of its supposed new mobile chipset last year, it seemed as if the company had finally thrown in the towel. But at the 2017 Mobile World Congress, the company revealed that its recent failure in the mobile chipset space has given them the time to regroup and refocus on the upcoming 5G technology, where the company is planning to make a strong comeback.

Speaking to reporters at the MWC 2017, the company’s general manager of 5G Business and Technology, Robert Topol, revealed that the company plans to make a major play in 5G when the next-generation wireless technology becomes approved and standardized sometime next year and when devices sporting the new technology start showing up, which is sometime near the end of 2019 or early 2020.

Intel is not only working on and planning to develop prototypes and chipsets for the smartphone space. It is also talking to automobile manufacturers as well and the company is being quite aggressive with getting their early chipsets and prototypes to anybody and everybody. Intel is also working on bringing 5G technology to homes to power the next-generation of Smart Home devices. The company is currently working with companies like Ericsson, Nokia, and Samsung on their 5G initiatives.

There may still be a few years before 5G becomes a reality but it looks like Intel is making itself ready for its inevitable arrival and making sure that it doesn’t get left behind again like it did with LTE.
