Maximus & Tin-aw’s ‘Base Camp’ merges art with athletics

Art and athleticism don’t get linked at first thought. But using these two seemingly unrelated concepts form the base of a new collaboration between Maximus Athlete’s Shop Cafe and Tin-aw Art Gallery.

“Base Camp,” a collaborative venture that launched today at Maximus in Pioneer, celebrates the world of athletes through art. A variety of paintings and sculptures made by 22 young artists adorn the walls and shelves of the cycle café, making for a sort of scavenger hunt for the different artworks. The likes of Mars Bugaoan, Lennard Buhay, Lofranco, Lee Paje, Jun-jun Sta. Ana, Nicole Tee, and Jemime Yabes were tasked to create pieces that show their views on the “life of the athlete, the physical body, and movement using their medium of choice.”

The pieces have been carefully curated by Tin-aw with the help of exhibit designer Ricky Francisco from the Lopez Museum & Library. You see how Tin-aw made use of the different areas of Maximus with intentionally placed artworks. A piece called “Healing” by Ambie Abaño shows a human heart with stitches in it placed right above the treadmill in the shop. Maximus’s director Andy Leuterio jokes around how it reminds us to not over exert ourselves when it comes to exercise.

The show itself feels intentional and playful at the same time. You’ll get to see some of our favorites below but to see all the pieces (or even snag one for yourself) you’ll need to drop by Maximus at 126 Pioneer Avenue, SPARTA, Mandaluyong. This first of a series of exhibitions Maximus and Tin-aw plan will be up at the store until December 10.
