After being in the industry for a number of years, I’ve seen my fair share of TVs with varying sizes, resolutions, and designs. A lot of them packing in as much tech as they possibly can. When we think they’ve reached the pinnacle and nothing else can be done, TV manufacturers are now looking to alter the shape of TVs, while pushing display technology further into something that’s almost indiscernible by the naked eye.
Curved TVs aren’t exactly new but they are being refined by the likes of LG and its competitors. LG charges ahead of the pack by bringing the curve to its OLED TV segment. And we’re getting a taste of these new screens as the 4K OLED TVs come to the Philippines this month. We got a sneak peek of the new TVs during a small product demonstration/preview hosted by LG at Aruga by Rockwell Hotel last September.
The South Korean tech giant ups the game by bringing 4K Ultra High Definition technology together with OLED technology, a display tech that allows for deeper blacks and richer color contrast as compared to its LED and LCD cousins. The technology is designed to offer unparalleled picture quality, true-to-life colors, and crisp imagery due to its perfect black contrast.
LG also decides to marry these two display technologies with a sleek and sexy curved look. It has what the company says is a “perfect slim aesthetic concept” that makes the TV appear like it’s floating from its stand. The curve LG claims also helps widen the viewing angles of the TV further, meaning you don’t have to be seated dead center to fully enjoy watching on this TV. OLED technology also helps in making thinner and sleeker TV sets. This new lineup is touted as being the industry’s first slimmest curved TV design at 4.8mm thin, which makes it even thinner than some of the smartphones you carry around with you.
With LG’s webOS 2.0 user interface, LG’s OLED TV provides user-friendly interaction. It’s easier to navigate with the improved Magic Remote, which when demonstrated to us was also used as a game controller of sorts as well as a remote for other devices attached to the OLED TV. With sound designed by audio company Harman/Kardon, LG boasts of superior audio, too. But we’d say a TV like this deserves to have an equally amazing home theater system attached to it.
Set to come out in 55-inch and 65-inch sizes, the LG OLED TV will be available this month. Prices weren’t revealed yet during the product demo.
