The fiercely contested battles for the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia AM and Lamborghini Cup titles will go down to the wire at the Round 6 double-header that precedes the World Finals at Italy’s Circuit de Vallelunga. With Chris van der Drift and Super Trofeo Junior Marco Giltrap having secured the PRO title and Dan Wells and Oscar Lee having wrapped up the PRO-AM championship, Thursday and Friday’s Round 6 will decide the AM and Lamborghini Cup titles, before the drivers from the Asian championship in their fleet of Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO2s join their sister European and American championships for the World Finals on November 18 and 19.
In the AM class, the title fight is Thailand versus South Korea, with Thai drivers Aniwat Lommahadthai and Pasarit Promsombat in the Lamborghini Bangkok car having a slim, three-point lead over SQDA – GRIT Motorsport’s Changwoo Lee and John Kwon of South Korea in the Lamborghini Seoul car. Both teams have each taken four AM wins this season, but the Star Performance by Absolute Thai drivers have found top form as of late, taking the last three class victories. There are 32 points on offer in Round 6, and expect both teams to bring their best to the title fight.
The Lamborghini Cup has provided season-long drama and the title contest is now a four-way shoot-out. Thai driver Supachai of Siamgas Corse leads the category, 12 points ahead of Iron Lynx driver Kumar Prabakaran. Dr. Ma is a further 10 points adrift, while brothers Hairie and Haziq Oh of HZO Fortis Racing Team in the Lamborghini Kobe car remain in mathematical contention for the Lamborghini Cup honours.
Outright winners of eight races this season – and winners of the past six consecutive races – Van der Drift and Giltrap in the Lamborghini Auckland car will look to close out their season on the winning form they’ve consistantly demonstrated all season. In the PRO category they will be joined by Harmony Racing Shenghui Xu and Massimiliano Wiser in the Lamborghini Azabu car, who are looking for their first victory of the season.
Having secured top honours in Round 5 at Shanghai, newly crowned PRO-AM champions DW Evans GT’s Wells and Oscar Lee in the Lamborghini Osaka car are sure to be bouyed by their success and will be on the hunt for more. TRT Racing’s Qiang Li and Jonathan Cecotto will be looking to add to their tally of class victories, as will the father-and-son duo of Tony and Jackson Walls of Objective Racing. Like Giltrap, Australian Jackson Walls is also part of the Super Trofeo Junior programme, as is Chinese driver Xu. Vortex Racegraph’s Haowen Luo and Benjamin Rouget also race in the ultra-competitive PRO-AM class with plenty of nail-biting action expected in the category.
While the AM title fight is between two Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo EVO2 entries, the class is also expected to bring a full attack from Chinese drivers Zhilong Kang and Ray Lu of TRT Racing, BC Racing’s Johnson Huang and Vincent Tai, and Triple Ace Racing’s Henry K and Eric K, are all on the hunt for outright victory as they battle for the top step of the podium in Italy.
Tuesday’s opening free practice session will be followed by a second, 50-minute free practice run on Wednesday morning. Two 15-minute qualifying sessions will take place on Wednesday afernoon. The first race of the double-header is on Thursday at 15:05 local time, while Race 2 – the final race of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia 2023 – is on Friday at 15:25 local time (all times UTC+01:00).
Following the Asian championship finale, the drivers from the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia will contest the World Finals. Two qualifying sessions for AM+Lamborghini Cup and for PRO+PRO AM are schedule for Saturday ahead of the opening AM+Lamborghini Cup and PRO+PRO AM races. The World Finals conclude on Sunday, with race 2 of both the AM+Lamborghini Cup and the PRO+PRO AM.
