Kwento Natin 'To!: 36 years of People Power Revolution; Dokyu Power to screen The Kingmaker for free

Thirty-six years ago, millions of Filipinos from all walks of life gathered at EDSA and all over the Philippines to show the world what real democracy looks like by ousting a powerful dictator through a peaceful revolution. 36 years later, The Philippines faces the threat of the possibility of the return of the Dictator’s son into power.

In the continued pursuit of historical truth and integrity, the Filipino Documentary Society (FilDocs) and DAKILA will launch a six-week-long Dokyu Power Film Festival on February 25, 2022, in commemoration of  the anniversary of the People Power Revolution, through an online forum entitled “May Power pa ba ang People?”. To kick off the festival, Dokyu Power will screen Lauren Greenfield’s controversial documentary film, The Kingmaker for free starting  February 25, and will premiere Augie Rivera’s Isang Harding Papel, a filmed version of the musical of the same title, written for the stage by Nanoy Rafael, and directed by Nor Domingo.  The initiative is supported by the Active Vista Center, Purin Pictures, Rappler, and Cinema Centenario’s Moov.

“Through the Dokyu Power Festival, we aim to reclaim the Filipino people’s narratives  against those who blur, twist, and rewrite history in favor of the tyrants and oppressors. By presenting real stories of our people’s lived experiences, we connect to our fellow Filipinos towards bridging visions of hope. To make real change happen and become meaningful to their lives, livelihood, and lifestyle,” Dokyu Power Deputy Festival Director Alex Poblete said.

“May Power pa ba ang People?”, the online forum, aims to serve as a platform for meaningful critical political discourse on the importance of people empowerment in nation-building. Guest speakers include Doris Nuval, a media and communication specialist who holds the record for being the longest held female political prisoner of the Marcos regime;  Atty. Andy Bautista, former Commissioner of the PCGG and the COMELEC; Mr. John Nery, Columnist and Editorial Consultant of Rappler and the Convenor of Consortium on Democracy and Disinformation; and Mr. Nick Deocampo, filmmaker and film historian; with veteran journalist Ces Drilon as moderator.

According to the organizers, DAKILA and FilDocs,“We hold power to change the story. This 2022 Philippine National Election is our portal to build a better Philippines for all. The choice is ours to reclaim our stories and shape our path towards the future we need, want, and deserve. May kwento at kwenta ang boto mo.”

Along with The Kingmaker, Dokyu Power will also be screening the 2022 Best Documentary Feature Nominee for the Oscars, Writing With Fire; and 2021 Academy Award Nominee for Best International Feature and Best Documentary Collective; the Emmy-Award winning Silence of Others; Ditsi Carolino’s Manila Lockdown: One of the longest COVID lockdowns in the world; Aswang; and The Cleaners, among others.
