IFA Roundup: Acer’s Stackable PC

Continuing our coverage of this year’s IFA or Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin, we feature Acer’s latest contributions into the technology industry with three different devices: a stackable PC, a gamer’s tablet, and a Windows 10 phone.

Acer Unveils Modular, Stackable PC

The downside of a PC user is that after a year or two, there is always the newest, faster model. You could upgrade the PC but most people aren’t comfortable opening up their PC case and fiddle with the components.

At this year’s IFA in Berlin, Germany, Acer announced a modular, stackable PC which the Taiwanese company is calling the Revo Build. The core unit itself measures a measly 5 inches by 5 inches which contain 32GB of flash storage, the latest Pentium or Celeron CPU from Intel and up to 8GB of upgradable RAM. Need more storage? Get a block which adds 500GB or even 1TB of hard drive storage and stack it on top of the base block. Need more graphic power? Get a block with a beefier GPU and stack it on top of the HDD block. The blocks are use magnetically aligned pins to connect everything together.

Acer Predator Gets More Mobile

Acer also unveiled two new products under its Predator gaming line. The Predator 8 is an 8-inch 1080p Android tablet using Intel’s Atom x7-Z8700 64-bit, quad-core processor. It includes the latest Gen8 graphics from Intel as well as 2GB of RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of flash storage. The Predator 8 also has a microSD slot for expansion. The Predator 8 comes with 4 front speakers with support for surround sound.

Even smaller but just as powerful is the Predator 6. This Android smartphone packs MediaTek’s 10-core SOC and 4GB of RAM along with its 6-inch, FullHD display, four front-facing speakers, and a 21MP rear-facing camera. On the graphics front, the Predator 6 has a Mali-T880 GPU to power even the most intense mobile games.

Expect the Predator 8 to be available worldwide in October while there is no release date for the Predator 6.

Acer Revives the “Pocket PC” with the Jade Primo Windows 10 Phone

Finally, Acer unveiled its latest Windows Phone running Windows 10. Powering the Jade Primo is a Snapdragon 808 64-bit, 6-core processor with an Adreno 418 GPU. The 5.5-inch display sports a 1080p resolution. For the rear-facing camera, the Jade Primo has a 21MP sensor while the front-facing camera has an 8MP sensor.

The Jade Primo is also the first smartphone shown at IFA to support Microsoft’s Continuum that lets you dock the phone into a dock and connect and large display, keyboard, and mouse and use Universal apps. These Universal apps can run on both X86 and ARM hardware. Continuum essentially turns the Jade Primo into desktop PC.
