Huawei is back at it — flaunting its latest innovation in mobile photography. We cannot deny that the brand has set the bar high in this department. This makes the latest generation in the P series — the Huawei P60 Pro — highly anticipated by photography enthusiasts. Will it be successful in keeping the throne in a highly competitive market? Find out in this review.
Design and build
What’s really fascinating about the Huawei P60 Pro is its ability to marry technology and art. This takes the form of the Rococo Pearl colorway. The elegance and beauty the mother-of-pearl design exudes dates back to Rococo style in the 18th century. Absolutely timeless.
Since the design process involves handcrafted artisanal methods, there will be no repetition in the pearl pattern, making it one of a kind and more desirable.
Apart from the admirable aesthetics, the P60 Pro continues to impress ergonomically. Although it leans on the heftier side weighing 200g and measuring 8.3mm, the curved edges offer a very comfortable grip, which more than makes up for it.
Display
The visual appeal doesn’t end at the rear; it’s got an equally welcoming front. This starts with the vibrant and boundless greeting of the 6.67-inch Quad-Curve LTPO OLED screen, then followed by the highly intuitive user interface. It felt like getting acquainted with someone and instantly clicking.
With more screen time, it feels like a constant cycle of being dazzled by the display. I find myself indulging in a visual feast while binge-watching my top picks on Netflix; perhaps it was the good mix of good color accuracy, vivid colors, and fine details that led to this. Let’s not forget the 120Hz refresh rate that made every interaction feel like a breeze.
It doesn’t stop there. While I did have my fun watching, listening to the audio compounded the already immersive viewing experience.
On a different note, it pays off to have a durable pal that can withstand accidental drops, more so if you’re a clumsy fellow. Fortunately, the P60 Pro is the complete package. It features the Kunlun Glass with heightened drop-resistance (10x).
Camera
Now we’re down to the main event — the P60 Pro’s camera setup. Propped up at the rear is the 48MP Ultra Lighting Main Camera, 48MP Ultra Lighting telephoto camera, and 13MP ultra-wide-angle camera.
Isn’t it amazing when something is built to adjust to our needs? The wonders of the main shooter begin with the auto-adjustable physical aperture (F1.4-F4.0). You’ll notice that this feature is at play while shooting various scenarios.
I tried shooting a group photo in broad daylight and it automatically adjusted to a smaller aperture (F4.0) to keep everyone in the frame sharp. On the other hand, shooting beautiful sceneries had a larger aperture (F2.0), enough to take light in and retain sharp details. More importantly, it fared well in dark scenarios. Colors still pop and sharpness of images is at par with shots taken in good lighting — a dream of every night owl and partygoer.
It’s not just its adaptive capability that impressed me, but also its ability to do so superbly.
Next up is the 48MP telephoto camera I easily grew fond of utilizing the 3.5x optical zoom. It has the capacity to highlight subjects beautifully amid a detailed backdrop.
Want to take an amazing photo of your idol on stage or snap pretty city landscapes? The P60 Pro can do it for you as it excels in zooming capabilities. Once again, the details of the photo remain uncompromised. It can literally magnify the beauty of any shot.
The P60 Pro’s 13MP selfie shooter is equally impressive. You can brave all types of lighting conditions and still be left with selfies with outstanding quality. Under harsh lighting conditions, images exhibit wide dynamic range, rich details, and good color accuracy.
Performance
Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset and running on 8GB of RAM, it was highly predictable that the P60 Pro would run smoothly no matter what task you’d command it to do. After putting it to the test, it did not disappoint.
On a busy day, carrying out multiple tasks at once is absolutely manageable and trouble-free. The same is true once I started engaging in heavier loads like gaming. Running titles like Mobile Legends was free from lags and frame drops. This experience extends when taking it up a notch and trying graphically demanding games like Asphalt 9.
But then again, one thing you should note is you’re faced with the limitations of only having 4G connectivity. Depending on one’s power needs, it might be easy for casual users to look past this.
Packed with 256GB of storage, users are given the liberty to unleash their photo-hoarding selves. No need to go through the tedious process of deleting safety shots. In addition, it’ll be easier to explore plenty of apps with the generous capacity.
Battery
Even as I was shooting plenty of stills and videos and browsing through social media the whole day, it proved to be reliable with its sufficient 4815mAh battery. No charging in-between activities necessary, thankfully.
Should you find yourself charging at the end of the day, juicing up with the 88W SuperCharge will feel like a fleeting moment. In my experience, I reached 50% in a little over 10 minutes. A full tank would mean waiting for less than 40 minutes.
Verdict
Huawei has taken big leaps to further its mobile photography prowess. For content creators and photography enthusiasts, the P60 Pro is an enticing offer as it provides professional-level photography plus the sought-after portability. Simply put, it’s the next best thing to expensive and bulky camera equipment.
If you haven’t encountered love at first sight, laying your eyes on the rear of the device might just evoke the feeling. There’s no denying the beauty of the Rococo Pearl design. In fact, personally, it was one of the major hooks.
The P60 Pro doesn’t fall short in other facets. It ticks off the wants and needs of other types of users who look for durability, stunning visual quality, and large battery capacity.
Although it shines in the design and camera department, the P60 Pro still possesses the well-roundedness that most users search for. Thus, it becomes a competitor that’s tough to beat in the flagship race.
