The latest Oris Aquis model comes in the form of the Oris Hangang Limited Edition. This exclusive watch is limited to just 2,000 pieces and was crafted in support of Seoul KFEM’s cleaning project of the Hangang River, which runs through the Korean capital and acts as a water supply for over ten million of its citizens. The KFEM (Korea Federation for Environmental Movements) is South Korea’s largest environmental non-governmental organization.
As a component of KFEM’s partnership with Oris, a sequence of ‘cleanup days’ are scheduled alongside a post-cleanup discussion on proper waste disposal and environmentally focused campaign efforts. Hundreds of volunteers will gather over several days to clean up the river on foot and via boat collecting litter, rubbish, plastic and other pollutants. KFEM ultimately aims to spread clean water awareness through five sustainability initiatives:
“The first is focused on the Hangang River. We’re demanding an end to irresponsible development along the river and that a vital waterway is reopened by demolishing a dam blocking it. The second is to save local forests and to encourage biodiversity. Third is to eliminate plastic waste. Fourth is to reverse climate change through the use of safe, clean energy. And the fifth is to clean up our air by reducing traffic pollution.”
What stands out the most with the Oris Hangang Limited Edition is its 43.50mm case, which houses a gleaming green dial and matching bezel. The gradating shades of green are supposed to mimic the vibrant colours of the Hangang River’s source waters. The watch itself is protected by domed sapphire glass on both sides, with an anti-reflective coating within. The timepiece is reminiscent of the Oris Aquis and classic diver silhouettes with some unique features that make it stand out such as a seconds subdial and prominent circular date function.
Another distinctive touch to the watch is the caseback which contains an engraving and outline of the Hangang River passing through the Seoul landmass. A “Hangang Limited Edition” notation also reminds the wearer of the exclusivity and deserving cause for which the watch was made. Superluminova technology illuminates the watch a bright turquoise in the dark, again evoking the aquatic and environmental nature of the timepiece.
In terms of technical functions, the watch contains an in-house Oris 743 “High Mech” automatic movement. It also boasts a power-reserve of around 38 hours. Keeping the watch together is a classic and contrasting stainless steel metal bracelet. The Oris Hangang Limited Edition retails for CHF 2,500
