Last year, Globe LIVE and 9Works Theatricals staged Yuletide classic A Christmas Carol, an uplifting tale of penny-pinching Scrooge’s transformation to a kind philanthropist. The timeless Charles Dickens tale was a big hit last year, drawing over 3,000 attendees on Christmas Day alone.
Amplifying its timeless quality, Globe LIVE will be restaging the performance anew for Christmas this year. However, this year’s performance will not be an exact rehash of last year’s show. 9Works director Robbie Guevarra promises that the restaging will feature new set designs, new directions, and new choreography. The 2017 show will also feature new cast members including Franco Laurel as the Ghost of Christmas Past and Jaime Yupangco/Elai Estrella as Tiny Tim.
At an earlier Globe event this year, head for creative marketing and multimedia services Joe Caliro promised that this year’s A Christmas Carol is the start of “a new tradition for the Filipino families,” hinting that there will be more restagings in the Christmases to come.
Outside of the theater, the production will also give families the chance to spread the Christmas cheer to the less fortunate, particularly the scholars of the Hero Foundation. A Christmas tree will be installed at the Globe ICONIC Theater. Theatergoers can buy ornaments and hang them on the tree. Proceeds will fund the Hero Foundation scholarships for children of fallen Filipino soldiers.
The Globe LIVE re-staging furthers the company’s push to provide amazing online and offline experiences for its customers. Caliro says, “we have been disrupting certain spaces, and now we are disrupting theater by producing a play that will run in December instead of November as what everybody is used to. We want to offer a Christmas activity that can be enjoyed by the Filipino family that is looking to create its new traditions.”
The Globe LIVE and 9Works Theatricals staging of Menken & Ahren’s A Christmas Carol will run on December 4 to 10, December 14 to 17, and December 21, 22, and 24 to 27 at the Globe ICONIC Theater, BGC.
