First impressions: realme 12 5G

Not so long ago realme launched two devices from the latest number series: the 12 Pro+ 5G and 12+ 5G. And now, we’re looking at another drop from the tech brand — the base model realme 12 5G. Clearly it shares the same elegant design language, but what else can we expect from this budget-friendly option?

Design and build

Having tested several realme smartphones, I reckon design is one of the tech brand’s forte. The new realme 12 5G is a testament to that.

From the color choices, finishes and camera layout, it appears to cater to the aesthetics of Gen Z’s and Millennials.

The device we’re reviewing comes in Twilight Purple, which you’ll appreciate more when light hits the rear. It’s simply beautiful — you’ll get mesmerized by the way it subtly shines. The other option is Woodland Green.

The boxy frame provides an easy grip, although it’s not as smooth around the edges so you’ll feel it slightly digging on your palms.

On the bright side, it has a light and slim body to sort of compensate for the above-mentioned. It weighs 188g and measures 7.69mm.

Display

Up front, you have a large 6.72-inch FHD+ display. The bezels are noticeably thinner compared to its predecessor (84.4%) as it has a screen-to-body ratio of 91.4%.

A snappy and responsive display can also be expected with its upgraded 120Hz refresh rate. With everything combined, it’s looking to be a good companion to binge-watch series.

It gets the Mini Capsule 2.0, which adds appeal to the front camera punch-hole. You’ll see an expanding animation that feeds you with necessary information: charging and battery status, data usage, step tracking, weather notifications, event reminders, and music playback control.

Camera

Headlining the stunning camera layout is the 108MP main camera that utilizes a Samsung HM6 sensor. It also supports 3x In-Sensor zoom, which should give you crisp images when experimenting with closeup shots, but we’ll see how it’ll fare in real life scenarios.

For selfie enthusiasts, they have the 8MP selfie camera to look forward to.

Performance

Performance-wise the realme 12 5G is powered by the Mediak Dimensity 6100+ processor. My initial experience was a breeze, and we’re hoping for consistency under different loads.

It doesn’t fall short in terms of storage and memory as it boasts 256GB ROM and 8GB RAM, respectively. That should be more than enough for typical users.

Battery and charging

It boasts a combination of a large battery life and fast-charging capabilities: 5000mAh battery and 45W SUPERVOOC Charger. This could mean less time spent by a wall just to charge your phone. And if ever you do, it might just be a fleeting moment.

Verdict

So far, I’m pleased with what the realme 12 5G brings to the table. Everyday reliability is what most users look for; and one look at the spec sheet, this latest iteration appears to provide just that. But with the sea of options in the midrange segment, does it have what it takes to win you over? Find out in our full review.
