First impressions on the Huawei MateBook 14

At first sight, the new Huawei MateBook 14 reveals an understated charm with its sleek and luxurious design. Nothing too flashy, yet I’m quite sure it will still turn heads. Hustling day in and day out, we need a device with highly accomplished specs to keep us productive. Will the specs be equally impressive as its aesthetics?

Design and Build

Featuring a robust aluminum body in Classic Space Grey, the lightweight facade is heightened. Surprisingly, despite the sleek and slim (15.9mm) look, it weighs more than it appears — 1.49kg.

On most ultraslim notebooks, ports tend to be absent. Fortunately, Huawei decided to go in a different direction and retain this in the MateBook 14, perhaps adding more weight. Personally, I’d take this over the lack thereof, as having plenty of attachments defeats the purpose of traveling light.

Display

The 14-inch screen is accompanied by FullView Display with 4.9mm bezels and 3:2 aspect ratio. This facilitates productivity since the fusion of two brings more screen area to work with and height to enable you to multitask, respectively.

It didn’t disappoint in the visual department either. Supporting 2K resolution and 100% sRGB color gamut, it will lend itself well to entertainment purposes with its on point details and vivid and rich colors. Acceptable for outdoor use is the 300 nits of brightness. As for the Eye Comfort mode, we’ll find out in the full review if it’s really less straining during hours of work and play, and if the overall display provides an immersive experience.

Performance

If you’re one to multitask or extensively use demanding software, a powerful processor is a requisite in order to fulfill your tasks without a hitch. Complementing features — the 11th Gen Intel Core i5 processor, WiFi 6, and new thermal design — will allow a sustained smooth user experience. To add to that, its capacity to switch to Performance mode makes it even more favorable. Finally, it supports up to 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD.

Something notable and new is the Huawei Share which lets you sync your laptop with your phone, simply put. Even more exciting to know is how seamless the Smart Office solution — Huawei Super Device — will operate.

Battery

A 56Wh battery that permits 11 hours of productivity and a 65W power adapter complete the package. A lighter load is made possible since the Huawei MateBook 14 comes with a compact charger — almost identical to phone chargers.

Final thoughts

The Huawei MateBook 14 packs all-around features that are worth knowing and there are more in store as it sets foot on the smart features territory. Stay tuned as we take a deep dive in the world of Huawei’s Smart Office solution in the full review.
