A new study by Inchcape reveals that 82% of Filipino consumers would consider purchasing a New Energy Vehicle (NEV) purely for environmental reasons, the highest level recorded across seven Asia-Pacific markets.
The findings come from Inchcape’s latest Drivers of Change research, conducted by the company’s Centre for the Future of Mobility across seven APAC markets and surveying nearly 3,600 respondents.
The study shows that NEV ownership in the Philippines currently stands at 14%, as the country enters the next phase of its mobility transition.
“The shift to sustainable mobility in the Philippines is happening in a very pragmatic way,” said Alex Hammett, Managing Director, South Asia & Pacific, Inchcape. “Filipino consumers are increasingly aware of the environmental benefits of electrification, but their decisions are ultimately shaped by practicality: affordability, reliability, and how a vehicle supports everyday mobility. That is why a multi-pathway approach, offering both hybrids and full electric vehicles, is important to accelerate adoption.
Mobility as an Economic Enabler
- The Philippines is the only surveyed market where work access outranks convenience as the top reason for owning a car.
- 81% of near-term buyers cite work access as their main motivation.
- 59% say vehicle ownership expands access to better job opportunities further away.
Hybrids: The Practical Transition Technology
- 82% of Filipinos agree hybrids offer the ideal balance of cost-efficiency and environmental benefit (vs. 69% regional average).
- Hybrids are seen as the critical bridge technology for intentional progress.
Commitment to the Filipino Driver
Beyond data, Inchcape Philippines is investing in capability building across its network, equipping technicians and sales consultants to support customers with informed guidance on battery life, safety, and total cost of ownership.
“As the market evolves, our role goes beyond selling vehicles. We are helping build the capabilities and confidence needed to support the shift to electrified mobility,” said Alex Hammett, Managing Director, South Asia & Pacific, Inchcape.
