Elegant daily driver—the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Quartz Chronograph

Here’s one Swiss watch that looks way more expensive than it actually is. And one that will match your wardrobe, whether you’re in a power suit or in a casual getup.

It’s Maurice Lacroix’s Aikon Quartz Chronograph. A reinterpretation of the Swiss brand’s captivating Calypso watch of the 90s, the Aikon has become an icon in its own right. It’s a timepiece that presents an elegant and distinctive design. The icing on top is its added functionality, courtesy of its chronograph functions and date display and its 10 ATM water resistance with its screwed crown.

Design-wise, the Aikon Quartz Chronograph has come a long way, and this newest iteration sports an upgraded specification and now measures a slightly smaller yet still head-turning 42mm in diameter. It’s now offered in three dial options: an assertive shade of black, an understatedly sophisticated ocean-like blue or my test watch, which sports a classically elegant colorway in silver with contrasting blue subdials and counters.

A close look reveals rich visual and tactile details as well as sumptuous finishes. The surface of each dial has been enriched with a sunbrushed finish that beautifully engages with light, which filters through a sapphire crystal glass with a double anti-reflective coating. The hour markers are rhodium-plated for that beautiful sparkle while the white hour and minute hands are super-luminova for superb legibility even underwater and are also rhodium-plated.

An aperture at 6 o’clock—instead of the more common 3 o’clock—displays the date. The Maurice Lacroix logo and branding take its pride of place in the unique position of 3 o’clock instead of the almost universal place under 12 o’clock. For the chronograph, the seconds function is by the central hand, the 30 minutes counter is at 9 o’clock, and the 1/10 second counter is at 12 o’clock.

Another unique design element is the bezel, which features an eye-catching six “claws” design. A highly versatile watch, the Aikon Quartz Chronograph is equally at home in the board room, at the racetrack, or even on a morning run.

Always attentive to market feedback, the brand from the Franches Montagnes has reduced the case diameter slightly to 42mm, a size that would suit more wrists. Careful consideration has also been given to the design and execution of the stainless steel case and bracelet which ergonomically hug the wrist, granting superb wearer comfort.

Consistent with all Aikon models, the watch is endowed with the brand’s Easy Strap Exchange system, which allows the wearer to adapt the look of their watch to their outfit, swapping the 25mm strap for an alternative with just a few user-friendly clicks.

Regardless of time and occasion, the Maurice Lacroix Aikon Quartz Chronograph looks sporty yet luxurious—the perfect multitasker. As always, the Aikon proves the ideal timepiece for the sartorial urban dweller.
