In recent times, we have seen Hyundai release bolder and more cross-functional models that have made splashes in their own respective markets. With the introduction of the Stargazer, one can expect even more of the bold design and superb versatility.
The Stargazer GLS Premium boasts a Smartstream G1.5 petrol engine with 6-speed IVT (Intelligent Variable Transmission), a sophisticated design that exudes a dynamic and expressive personality, a generous interior, as well as Hyundai SmartSense for advanced safety and protection. Hyundai’s Stargazer is certainly poised to be a mainstay as an entry-level, 7-seater MPV.
Engine:
Under the hood of the Stargazer, you’ll find a capable engine integrated with IVT, which is Hyundai’s flagship proprietary technology. This facilitates gears shifting more responsively with less delay or lag, ultimately resulting in both a smoother and more enjoyable ride, as well as having better fuel efficiency.
With maximum outputs out 115 ps @ 6,300 rpm and 148.8 Nm @ 4,500 rpm, the Stargazer efficiently provides enough power when necessary.
On the highway, the Stargazer is responsive and steady; even at faster speeds, the vehicle still runs smoothly without experiencing any jerkiness. When driving with multiple passengers and heavy cargo, one can detect a bit of delay, though the engine can still supply enough energy and kick.
I also found the Stargazer to be quite impressive in terms of maneuverability. I feel it’s at just the right size for having more than enough space, all while being mobile (especially in our tight and gridlocked Metro Manila roads).
Moreover, there are different Drive Modes at your disposal to come in handy for varying driving situations. These are Normal, Eco, Smart and Sport modes.
Exterior:
At first glance, it’s definitely the Stargazer’s bold appearance that immediately stands out; not only is its design futuristic, it’s elegant and purposeful, too.
The Stargazer is available in iterations of Dragon Red Pearl, Magnetic Silver Metallic, Midnight Black Pearl and Creamy White Pearl. Though not as striking as its design, its monochromatic color scheme compliments the dynamic design well.
Appearing as if the junior of Hyundai’s larger people mover, the Staria, the Stargazer likewise has an unmistakable horizontal type DRL (Daytime Running Lights). This is one of the aspects that make its look even more distinct, as if Cyclops from X-Men made a cameo in Transformers.
At the rear, you’ll find similarities with its linear brake lights. Here, an H-Shape LED Rear Combination Lamp graces the Stargazer’s rear, which further adds to its flair and finesse.
Running through the Stargazer’s sides are sleek, one-curve silhouette designs that give off both a lustrous and sporty feel. Moreover, not only does this optimize cabin height for extra space, but also improves aerodynamics for better fuel efficiency and an overall smoother ride as well.
Some may feel the Stargazer to be unusual or even odd in appearance, though it’s exactly bold and intrepid traits that serve as a reflection of the type of consumer who would greatly appreciate this model.
Interior:
In terms of its minimalist interior, I’d say that its overall layout isn’t necessarily daring or audacious, unlike that of its exterior. What it lacks in flashiness, however, is made up for in terms of convenience, functionality, comfort and flexibility.
There is an ample amount of space throughout the Stargazer to provide a pleasant and enjoyable journey, which can be mainly attributed to its largest-in-class wheelbase (the distance between the front and rear wheels). This facet can be appreciated most especially when utilizing the third row seats, as there is more than enough room for the middle row to slide forward. This ultimately provides space that is more evenly distributed for a comfortable ride wherever in the vehicle you’re situated.
The Stargazer’s dashboard has a rather simple but efficient setup. Centered in the middle is its 8-inch display which might not be the largest in size, but is still adequate and serviceable. On either side of the infotainment system are three buttons with knobs below for volume and A/C controls. The Stargazer is also equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for seamless connectivity, and even a wireless charging station below the controls.
On the right hand side of the dashboard beneath the vents is a nifty hidden tray, useful for different storing purposes. As someone who typically carries around a lot of miscellaneous items and likes to keep them organized and uncluttered, the compartment is convenient for stashing my keys, wallet, shades, rubbing alcohol, and even my thermos when the cupholders are occupied.
Speaking of cupholders, the Stargazer’s has blue illumination at its bottom, adding a bit of flavor and color.
For added utility, a foldable tray is installed for the second row seats. Whether pulling my laptop out in the middle of traffic to catch up on work or driving thru to grab a quick breakfast before an early golf tee time, there are a plethora of ways for the tray to be at your service. Unfortunately, there is only one tray, which is located behind the front passenger seat.
Moving onto cargo space, the Stargazer provides a decent amount of it for typical everyday use. Although upon folding the rearmost seats is when the vehicle’s elongated body once again demonstrates its practicality; the Stargazer’s trunk can sufficiently host an amalgam of cargo, making it a suitable partner for grocery runs and road trips, to name a few.
In fact, on a recent golf trip with friends to Laguna, not only did the Stargazer provide enough load space for four golf bags and other equipment/bags, but it was able to take us to and from the course comfortably also.
All of these aspects put even more emphasis on the Stargazer’s spacious and cozy interior.
Safety:
For an advanced driver assistance system, Hyundai has installed its SmartSense technology into its Stargazer. With cameras, sonar and radar in operation, SmartSense serves as an extra set of eyes when driving, maneuvering or parking, consequently making the driving experience safer and easier.
Included are various different features that come in handy (and even possibly life saving) during a multitude of day-to-day scenarios. Some of which are Forward Collision-avoidance Assist (FCA), Lane Follow Assist (LFA), Lane Keep Assist (LKA), High Beam Assist (HBA), Blind-spot Collision-avoidance Assist (BCA), Rear Cross-traffic Collision-avoidance Assist (RCCA), Safe Exit Warning (SEW), and Rear View Monitoring (RVM).
Appearing and making its presence felt on the instrument cluster, the Hyundai SmartSense makes sure you’re not drifting, checks your blindspots, is wary of oncoming pedestrians, and could even detect if the driver is drowsy or inattentive based on observing behavioral patterns, among others.
To say that the SmartSense and all its extensive features is a necessity would be an understatement, most especially for a vehicle apt for small families and road trips.
Verdict:
In a bustling MPV segment, the Stargazer establishes itself with a capable motor for performance and efficiency, a roomy interior and, possibly its most notable feature, its futuristic design. Though the Stargazer GLS Premium variant might come at a more premium price of P1,288,000, all of these characteristics, along with the additional hefty safety features, make Hyundai’s entry into the MPV category one to be reckoned with.
