The iPod died last year. Because of the limited nature of its materials, Apple decided to discontinue production of its beloved iPod classic device. The device that started Apple’s road to stardom left behind a more touch-friendly family.

However, with the resounding success of its iPhone line and subsequent foray into the wearables market, the iPod line has been left trailing in the dust. It’s a device that sorely needs the updates enjoyed by its brethren.

With a gasp of “finally,” Apple users can now enjoy that update to another beloved product, the iPod touch. Now on its 6th generation, the iPod touch saw its last update way back in 2012. Apple has now fully embraced the touch’s capabilities as a mobile gaming device, besides a tough music player. The key update is its processor which has been upgraded to Apple’s A8 processor, the same one enjoyed by the iPhone 6, in 64-bit architecture. It also uses Metal Technology for its GPU. Apple promises a 10x faster performance compared to the previous generation of iPod touch.

It has a 4-inch Retina display screen (with 1136 x 640 resolution) to make gaming sharper and clearer. The rear camera has been increased to a new 8-megapixel iSight camera, while the front has a 1.2-megapixel FaceTime HD camera. An additional M8 coprocessor feeds data into Apple Health.

The iPod touch comes installed with iOS 8 but it is compatible with the free iOS 9 update coming later this year. It’s available at $199 for 16GB, $249 for 32GB, and $299 for the 64GB variant. There’s also a 128GB version which is available only directly from Apple at $399. The iPod touch is moving closer and closer to the memory giant iPod classic. It is available in space gray, blue, gold, pink, and silver.
