Apple announces the 5G-capable iPhone 12 lineup

Apple’s latest lineup of consumer products and smartphones were just announced earlier today, and there are now four options to choose from this Fall: the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. New 5G capability across the lineup will also provide faster network coverage, performance, streaming, and greater privacy. It promises peak 4.0 Gbps download speeds and 200 Mbps upload speeds in ideal conditions. If what you are running on your phone doesn’t require 5G, it will automatically switch to LTE. “5G just got real” indeed.

A14 Bionic Chip

All the iPhones come with a A14 Bionic chip that Apple claims to be the “fastest chip ever in a smartphone”. It is the first smartphone chip in the world built using 5nm process technology. The A14 contains a 6-core CPU and 4-core GPU which they also claim to be the fastest on the market.

iPhone 12 and 12 mini

The iPhone 12 brings the iPhone aesthetic back to a more squarish shape with smooth, rounded edges. It is crafted in a “Ceramic Shield” glass, which uses high temperature crystallization to improve toughness and durability. This process ultimately allows it to be 11% thinner, 15% smaller and 16% lighter. It features an OLED Super Retina XDR Display with a 2 million:1 contrast ratio. The iPhone 12 also features a dual-camera system: a 12MP wide and ultra-wide lens. It will come in five colors: Black, White, Product (Red), Green, and Blue. It retails for $799.

The budget-friendly iPhone 12 mini is the cheapest of the lot and will feature the same exact technical specifications as the iPhone 12. It is also the smallest of the lot, measuring in at just 5.4-inches. This is the smallest an iPhone has been since the iPhone 5, and will be perfect for those that prefer a more compact form factor. Apple claims it is the “smallest thinnest lightest 5G phone in the world”. It retails for $699.

iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max

For those who want the highest-end Apple phone currently available, there is the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Like last year’s version of the ‘Pro’, this year’s phones will also be available in a new exclusive colorway: ‘Pacific Blue’. The usual Black, Gray, White and Gold colors will also be available. It is crafted in a stainless-steel band and ‘Ceramic Shield’ glass for unmatched durability.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max features the biggest display ever on an iPhone coming in at 6.7 inches while the iPhone 12 Pro still comes in at a still sizable and familiar 6.1 inches. The ‘Pro Camera’ system of both phones is similar to the tri-camera system of last year’s ‘Pro’ lineup, but with an upgraded 12MP Ultra-Wide, Wide, and Telephoto lens. Apple also claims “capture, playback and edit HDR footage with Dolby Vision”. The iPhone 12 Pro comes with 128GB, 256GB, 512GB storage options and starts at $999, while the iPhone 12 Pro Max starts at $1099.
