Today, nearly a decade since its inception in 2007, the competition has grown to include international entries, raising the bar even higher. Now called adobo Design Awards Asia (aDAA), the organizers are once again inviting all professionals, freelancers and students to begin their journey into the world of design as they open this year’s competition.

Known as one of the country’s most prestigious juried competition for design, this year’s awarding highlights a range of creative fields that put the spotlight on designers across various disciplines.

The focus for this year’s competition will be the Open Category which is open to students as well as professionals, and calls for new work which may be submitted in various formats.  In line with the theme, Designing for a Bold New World, judges will be looking at designs that push the boundaries of creativity in order to achieve positive results.  Basically, any new work that is rebellious, almost reckless, but still relevant to the world.  Select submision formats will be presented by sponsors as special awards, namely Mobile App for Good by Globe Telecom, T-Shirt by Bench, Digital Short Film by Power Mac Center and Video by Brand New Media. Other special categories will be announced at a later time.

The aDAA is honored to be working together with the D&AD (Design and Art Direction), a British educational charity that promotes excellence in design and advertising. The partnership aims to further elevate the already exceptional standards of creative excellence that the adobo Design Awards is known for. Established names and personalities from advertising and design compose this year’s top calibre line of jury which will be headed by the current D&AD President, Andy Sandoz.

“We are extremely proud to be chosen by D&AD to represent their activities in the region and to partner with them in presenting this year’s competition.  By raising the standards of excellence, we hope to see a new dose of creativity and innovations in the work we receive from both local and international talents,” shares Angel Guerrero, Founder and Editor-In-Chief, adobo magazine.  “Having no less than the current president of the D&AD, Andy Sandoz, head the jury is a step toward the right direction, and validates our commitment to raise the bar of design excellence in the country to be at par with global standards”, she added.

Other members of the jury include Melvin Mangada, AJ Dimarucot. Dan Matutina, Jowee Alviar, Marcus & Bernie Nada, Benjamin Marasigan, Leigh Reyes, Patrick Cabral, Ric Gindap and Arnold Arre. Together with Andy Sandoz, jury members will be giving short talks on design-related topics during the adobo Design Series to be held on March 22 at the Mind Museum. There will also be a Design Masterclass presented by New York-based Lucille Tenazas, graphic designer and Associate Dean of the School of Art, Parsons The New School of Design on March 31 at Axon, Green Sun.

Deadline for submission of entries is on February 27. The competition is open to all students who are currently enrolled and design professionals who are working full-time or as freelancers.
