We live in a technological society that has learned to value both quality and quantity. The amount of gadgets that we own increase by the year. Smartphones may be able to do it all, but we still prefer dedicated devices for calling, watching movies, playing video games, and listening to music. There is no truly all-in-one device in the pragmatic sense. And everyone in a household has to have their own roster of the same devices. Everyone has to have their own phone, tablet, and computer. With such an influx of devices, it’s no wonder that our bandwidths suffer. Multiple devices feeding from the same stream will dry up the well constantly. Internet solutions are hard to come by, especially here where 1Mbps speeds are already considered blessings.
Celebrating 100 million units sold, Linksys, the global networking hardware provider, is bringing a router which hopes to provide Internet access to communities with increasing populations, increasing devices owned, and enlarging houses. The Linksys AC3200 Tri-Band Smart Wi-Fi Router maximizes performance and range for home networks. The router itself is powered by a penta-core system consisting of a 1GHz dual-core processor and three integrated co-processors which support the three bands that make it a tri-band router. The tri-band system divides the bandwidth into three bands: one 2.4GHZ band and two 5GHz bands. Obviously, the two 5GHz bands will be the go-to guys for speed and accessibility. Smart Connect technology built into the router makes sure the appropriate devices go to the go-to guys. Devices requiring high-speed connections will use the two 5GHz bands, with the router allocating the device to the speedier one. The 2.4GHz band will be allocated for low-speed transfers like text documents and small files.
The router is smart because it allocates devices to the best possible connection for consistent and reliable Internet speeds. Think of it in terms of road lanes. Normal single band routers are like single lane roads. You can have a Lamborghini Aventador go through it but if there’s a 10kph Indian rick shaw blocking your way, the Lambo’s speed goes to waste. The Tri-Band Router uses three lanes. There are two fast lanes for the supercars and one slow lane for the rick shaws. Just to see what it’s capable of, Kristian Anquillano, technical product manager, showed Ookla results for the router. It accelerated to a download speed of 929.73 Mbps with a low latency of 13ms. Before you go head over heels at that speed, these are results from Singapore’s Singtel. I wonder how it’ll work here at our dismal connection rates.
Besides the powerful technology within, the AC3200 has features for convenience and user friendliness. The Smart Wi-Fi feature makes the inner workings and settings accessible to the layman. Users will be able to access the controls we normally just give to the technician to tinker around with. With Smart Wi-Fi, you can see exactly what’s going on with your router like who’s connected and how their using their bandwidth. It’s particularly useful for leeching neighbors. You can make guest accounts for any visitors who want to access the Wi-Fi without giving them full access to your Wi-Fi capabilities. The router can also be used as a home video server. There is a USB 3.0 and a USB 2.0 port at the back. You can plug in your external storage and any compatible device can stream from that storage in lossless quality.
The router was also built to be vertical, as opposed to the usual horizontal format, to accommodate it for mounting on walls. This networking marvel costs quite a sum of P15,590. If you think that’s too much, Linksys wants you to divide the price by 3 years, then by 12 months, and finally by comparing that to how much you pay for Internet bills every month. The sum is an investment. It will be available in Octagon Computer, Villman Computers, and Complink stores.
