For the first time, the Philippines joins 26 other countries that are eligible to compete for the James Dyson Award, the international design award from the British tech company Dyson. The competition follows a broad brief of designing “something which solves a problem, big or small.” Those who win the international competition not only get exposure for their project but also take home £30,000 (around P2.2 million).

The competition is open to all young designers and engineers who has team members that are enrolled or have been enrolled in the last four years in at least one semester in an undergraduate or graduate program at a university. The deadline for entries will be midnight GMT of July 20, which is 8 am in the Philippines.
Entries will be chosen at a national level first before it will be taken to the international level where 20 entries will be shortlisted by a panel of Dyson engineers. The company’s founder Sir James Dyson himself will then review the projects and select the winner himself.

Last year’s winner was a team from McMaster University who worked on a low-cost, early detection melanoma skin cancer device called The sKan.

The James Dyson Award runs in 27 countries and regions worldwide. These are: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, UAE, UK, and USA.
