Howard, Goomi, and Phillips facing a giant blob in Minions & Monsters
Now showing in PH cinemas.
In Minions & Monsters, the lovable, villain-seeking tribe in overalls are not the only one causing mayhem and destruction. In the Minions’ quest to break into Hollywood, they unleash monsters upon the Earth, putting the world in peril. It’s up to the Minions to clean up their own mess and save humanity from their own shenanigans. At their aid, or their peril, are a cast of brand new characters ranging from an unexpectedly tiny monster to a robot-alien overlord.

Let’s take a closer look at the new characters of Minions & Monsters:

Minions James and Henry have always had their eyes on the big screen, and what better way to make a movie more interesting than with a real life monster? Though as Goomi appeared from their spellbook, they thought they’d get someone more… monstrous. Goomi is a tiny green Cthulhu-inspired creature, whose adorable looks clash with his terrifying nature. Since Goomi isn’t the monster they’d envisioned, Goomi helps the Minions find the perfect ones for their film.
Director Pierre Coffin chose South Park co-creator Trey Parker to voice Goomi, and the voice actor set out to create a unique voice for his monster. “Pierre gave me what might be the hardest voice direction possible: make this tiny Cthulhu-like monster sound really cute,” Parker says. “That’s a tall order when you’re working with the guy who created the Minions, because he’s already set the world record for cute. I do a lot of voices on South Park, so the challenge for us was finding something that felt new and specific to Goomi, and didn’t just sound like a tiny Cartman. Pierre had such a clear, funny, sweet idea for who Goomi was, and it was great creating another little monster in the world.”

Self-proclaimed Minion leader Dick is not a fan of the other Minions’ filmmaking sidequest. Instead, he sets his sights on the classic Minion goal: to find an evil overlord. Voiced by Jesse Eisenberg, robot-alien overlord Dort just might be the perfect candidate. Eisenberg wanted a blend of mechanical sounds and something distinctly human when coming up with Dort’s voice. “The dialogue was already written with this slightly robotic formality,” Eisenberg says. “So, the question became how much humanity should leak through. I liked the idea that he could sound very controlled and artificial, and then suddenly there is a small hesitation in his voice that makes him feel less certain than he wants everyone to believe.”

As the Minions journey with their newfound friend Goomi, they meet Phillips and Howard, monsters that looked like what the Minions envisioned when they set out to make a movie. Voiced by Bobby Moynihan, Phillips might look terrifying, but he’s not all what he cracks up to be. “I loved that Phillips looks like he should be pure nightmare fuel, but there is something oddly jolly about him,” Moynihan says. “He has his own unique energy, and I got to improvise a bit, which is always a gift in animation. Sometimes the things you try on the spot end up unlocking the character.”
Howard, who looks like a combination of a starfish and an octopus, was also found with Phillips, frozen by humanity with warnings not to release them. “Humanity stopped them at some point and made it very clear that they should never be released,” director Pierre Coffin says. “That gives Phillips and Howard a sense of danger before we really know what they can do.”
Phil LaMarr voices Howard, and as his creature has bellowing, sparse dialogue, he made sure to give it all he got. “Howard does not say much, so every sound had to carry a lot of weight,” LaMarr says. “I wanted the voice to feel like it came from somewhere deep and strange, as if this creature had been around much longer than anyone really understood.”
