Horsepower on your wrist

I was born on the year of the horse—which probably explains my obsession with horsepower.

Ever since I was a kid, I was always enthralled with cars. And like many car guys, that means I was always fascinated by watches as well.

Which is why the recent appearance of the new Oris The Year of the Horse Limited Edition on the global stage presents a very strong challenge to my efforts to not add yet another purchase on my credit card with this truly tempting timepiece.

Oris’ Year of the Horse Limited Edition was created to mark the Chinese Year of the Fire Horse, which begins on February 17, 2026. Those born in the Year of the Fire Horse are thought to exude enthusiasm, confidence and a strong drive to succeed, making the new lunar year a season of vibrant activity and bold endeavors.

This limited edition watch is appropriately clad in a blaze of crimson, from the deep red of the dial and the fiery hues of the subdials, to the rich brown tones of the supple cordovan leather strap—made of horse hide, no less.

Under the hood is Oris’ high-concept Calibre 113, one of the Swiss brand’s boldest movements. It has 38 jewels, a 10-day (240 hours) power reserve and a non-linear power reserve indicator, with the addition of a business calendar that displays the day, date and month of the year, as well as the week via a scale running around the dial edge.

This special watch adds galloping and relaxing horse motifs to the power reserve indicator display, symbolizing the moments when the watch’s mainspring is fully charged or ready to be wound. It’s a passionate, collectible watch limited to just 88 pieces (the number denoting double luck and double prosperity in Chinese)—one that fuses Swiss Made mechanical expertise with one of the most significant cultural events in the Chinese calendar.

The Year of the Horse sports a 43mm multi–piece stainless steel case and a domed sapphire glass with an anti–reflective coating inside. The caseback is likewise made of stainless steel, screwed, with a see-through sapphire glass back. A stainless steel crown ensures water resistance to 5 bar.

The beautiful deep red dial features Super Lumi-Nova hands for hours, minutes, week and month, with the small seconds at 9 o’clock, the non-linear power reserve indication at 3 o’clock, a date window at 9 o’clock, a day window at 12 o’clock, plus day, date and week corrector.

The dark brown cordovan leather strap fastens with a stainless-steel folding clasp. Each watch is delivered with a wooden box and has a warranty extended to five years with MyOris sign-up.

Stunning aesthetics, exceptional performance, sublime craftsmanship, and the rarity of a limited edition celebrating a significant cultural event—the Oris The Year of the Horse is truly a timepiece that belongs in the most discriminating stables.
