Every year LG is one of the most anticipated brands during CES. Their reveal events have always been extravagant and their products either impressive or promising. This year they’ve focused greatly on their giant and curved displays but they also haven’t forgotten about their smartphone fans. We rounded up their biggest product reveals below.
UltraWide Gaming and Curved Monitors
This year seems to be the year companies have decided to throw in their lot into the gaming market with a number of big and smaller brands unveiling gamer-centric monitors. In the case of LG, they’ve unveiled a new 21:9 UltraWide gaming monitor that features AMD’s new FreeSync technology that eradicates syncing issues between the GPU and the monitor which causes screen tearing. The technology is similar to competitor Nvidia’s G-Sync. The new display, called the 34UM67, is a 34-inch monitor with an UltraWide screen solution of 3440 x 1440 and features like a Black Stabilizer for illuminating darker scenery as well as a Dynamic Active Sync to reduce input lag. We’re excited to see how AMD’s FreeSync matches up to Nvidia’s G-Sync and how well LG’s UltraWide monitor does in sales in spite of the limited number of games that support the wider resolution.
For the non-gamers, LG also released a curved UltraWide display called the 34UC97 that’s targeted at professionals. It features the same screen size (34-inches) and resolution (3440 x 1440) as their aforementioned gaming monitor and, like other curved displays, also features a 178-degre viewing angle. Additionally, the 34UC97 also supports Thunderbolt 2 for those who work on Apple’s line of desktops. LG has not divulged release dates or pricing for both monitors but that information should come up within the next few weeks.
OLED 4K TVs
LG continues their monitor-centric CES showing with a new line-up of OLED 4K TVs for 2015. The line-up includes models with screen sizes ranging from 55-inches to a whopping 77-inches and feature either flexible, curved, or flat OLED 4K UHD displays.
The biggest and most impressive of the seven new models is the 77-inch Flexible Curved EG9900 which is capable of going flat to curved and back with a single press on the TV’s remote control. This enables the EG9900 to adapt to any environment and allows the user to adjust it to their preference. LG also released a non-flexible version of its 77-inch Curved OLED 4K TV in the EG 9700. The second most notable model in LG’s new line-up is the 65-inch Art Slim TV, called the EF9800, which is a flat TV that features a super slim and minimalist unibody design and a transparent stand that creates a floating effect. The rest of LG’s 2015 OLED 4K TV line-up include the 55-inch and 65-inch curved EG9600 as well as the 55-inch and 65-inch flat EF9500 that all feature the same floating design as the previously mentioned 65-inch Art Slim Unibody EF9800.
All of LG’s new OLED 4K TVs feature the company’s WRGB and Optimised True Color technologies as well as 4.2-channel Harman/Kardon audio systems and run on the latest WebOS 2.0 interface. The company has yet to announce price tags or release dates for their new models but they’re expected to hit store shelves within the next few weeks. We’re hoping the price tags of these new televisions aren’t as extravagant as the company’s previous offerings as 4K TVs and content slowly become more prevalent.
G Flex2
And to cap off LG’s round of reveals this year is the announcement of the predecessor of the company’s innovatively shaped smartphone, the LG G Flex. The aptly named G Flex2 features the same curved design as its predecessor albeit with a more complex curvature ranging from a radius of 400m to 700mm across the device’s entire body. The G Flex2 also features a smaller 5.5-inch P-OLED display but with a higher resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels that gives it a pixel density of 403ppi. The new curved phone is the first smartphone to feature the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor which is a 2.0GHz 64-bit Octa-Core CPU combined with an Adreno 430 GPU.
The G Flex2’s other specifications include 2GB of DDR4 RAM, 16GB or 32GB of storage, a microSD slot capable of handling up to 2TB, a 13-megapixel rear camera with OIS+ and Laser Auto Focus, a front-facing 2.1-megapixel camera, and a 3,000 mAh battery. The G Flex2 comes with the latest Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system out of the box and will initially be available in either Platinum Silver or Flamenco Red in Korea. The company did not mention when the phone will reach other global markets as well as an SRP for the device.
The G Flex2’s innovative design and specifications make it the most exciting of LG’s reveals this year at CES 2015 and we’re looking forward to seeing and trying out the G Flex2 in person.
