Hair dryer design has been around for over 60 years. They’re loud and bulky and can get really hot after extended periods of use. And so tech company Dyson wanted to address all of that with the Supersonic hair dryer. Launched internationally last year, it’s finally made its way to our shores. But what is so special about this high-tech and premium hair dryer?

Let’s get this out of the way first, the Supersonic is not a cheap hair dryer. It’ll cost you P21,500 to own one of these. As The Verge describes it, it’s like the Tesla of hair dryers. So what benefits do you get?

For one, Dyson boasts a “fast but focused air flow” courtesy of its compact V9 digital motor, which takes its technology from its famed vacuums. The V9 is Dyson’s smallest motor to date, though. With the motor capable of spinning at 110,000 revolutions per minute, it leaves in the dust standard hair dryers that spin at around 20,000 to 30,000rpm. And that means it can dry your hair faster than the usual dryer.

Dyson even placed the engine in an unusual spot inside the handle to serve a couple of purposes. One it gets to have a more high-tech/futuristic-looking head of the dryer and second is this balances out the weight of the hair dryer and makes it easier to handle as you dry your hair.

Having the motor at the base also allowed Dyson engineers to surround the motor with acoustic silencers to reduce sound. You still won’t be able to use it in a room where someone is sleeping but you will notice that it isn’t quite as loud as your typical hair dryer.

The Supersonic comes with four heat settings, three airflow settings, and a cold shot. It’s been developed with intelligent heat control, which makes use of the glass bead thermistor (basically a thermometer) to measure the temperature 20 times a second and sends this data to the microprocessor. This then controls the patented double-stacked heating element and makes sure your hair isn’t exposed to excessive temperatures.

This hair dryer also comes with three magnetic attachments to help dry and style your hair. And since these are attached by magnets, they’re easy to attach and adjust. With Heat Shield technology, these attachments also remain cool to touch.

Distributed exclusively by Whiteplanet Inc., the Dyson Supersonic can be found at Greenbelt 5, Century City Mall, Rustan’s Makati, Abenson Bonifacio Global City, SM Mall of Asia, and S Maison.
