It was a love fest of all things outdoors. R.O.X. held the Outdoor Festival last April 18 to 19 at Bonifacio High Street as part of the company’s Get Outside campaign. They hoped to attract both newbies and outdoor enthusiasts alike to see what the world beyond your home and your computer and/or mobile device can offer.
Different kinds of activities were held over the weekend. There were free Outdoor Talks such as “The Good Habits of Globetrotting” with Wanderlass’ Liliane Cobiao and Eagle Creek; “Getting Adventure’s Good Angles: An Outdoor Photography Workshop” with Winston Baltasar and Eddie Bauer; and “Nothing But Footprints: A Guide to Responsible Adventuring” with Dennis Lopez of UP Mountaineers and Osprey.
There was also a Zero Gravity Bouldering Competition sponsored by Power-Up and Sport Climbing Association of the Philippines, Inc. (SCAPI). Bouldering champions from all over the country fought for the top title and a round-trip airfare for two to Kota Kinabalu by Cebu Pacific Air.
Mountain Hardwear sponsored a human endurance challenge called “The Last Man Standing,” which takes inspiration from the Survivor game. Fourteen contestants had to endure nearly five hours of standing on a three-feet wooden pole under the scorching heat of the sun (on one of the hottest days of the year no less!). The reward was worth it though. The winner took home the complete outdoor treatment: an all-expense paid trip to Coron, Palawan courtesy of Cebu Pacific Air and The Funny Lion Inn plus a complete set of gear by Mountain Hardwear.
R.O.X. also hosted free outdoor film showing of movies that they hope would inspire people to explore. Some of the films shown include Lorax, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and Into The Wild.
